I hadn't considered this. May have to rework the plan.
I have this game.
Played 2 single player missions. It is fun, reminds me of Super Mario Galaxy crossed with de Blob.
Played 2 online matches. It ran very smooth and did not have to wait long for a match. Very fun also!
Damn, that final boss. If every level was like that the game would have Fzero GX like hardcore appeal. Great stuff.
So I tried to go online for my first online marathon-g and NNetwork was down for maintainence.
So instead I went back into the levels for the hidden scrolls, game is much cooler when looking around for stuff. I think that the single player is missing exploration, if they had made larger levels more like the arenas it would feel a lot like a great N64 platformer. Instead it's Super Mario Galaxy-lite.
It's all solid enjoyable stuff but feels like it's missing that something extra to push it into a higher gear - maybe some epic music, more challenging levels, voice acting, even vehicles would be cool if the single player was reworked to be a bit more like a conventional FPS.
Man I've been playing the wrong mode, multiplayer is totally awesome So much better than the single player which is still fun. Had a blast backing up my teamates, using the map to boost jump is so goooood. Level 4 now, unlocked all the standard weapons except the charger as I hated it on the demo. The specials are grin inducing. The game manages to capture that organised chaos feeling and you can still show your skill. Even though my team has lost plenty, my personal score is usually the 2nd best out of 8.
Admittedly, I have experienced some lag here and there and even been disconnected twice, but the internet here has been crapping out the past couple days so I can't blame the servers yet.
Bah, had a bad run yesterday. Kept getting teamed up with a weak team. Lost 6 matches out of 7...
Anyhow, what are everyone's favorite stages/weapons? Any tips & tricks you've come up with so far?
Personally I prefer the .52 Gal. It's pretty powerfull but hasn't got a great range. However, it's sub is a wall of paint, perfect for blocking your opponents in stages with narrow passages, and the special is the Wail, which is again, perfect for taking out opponents on narow passages.
As for stages, they're pretty even in their quality, save for Macrel what's-it, which is just a maze and a roller's wet dream. I think Urchin Underpass is my favorite because it has 2 large area's you need to divide your attention between.
As for play style, I usually try to get as deep in to enemy territory as I can as soon as possible, forcing the other team into defence. But this only works if I'm on a team that won't screw up our own half of the arena, so I'm not sure if it's the best approach. To get there as fast as possible I'll spray ink, dive in and 'jump' out while spraying the next trail. This way I lose less momentum while I'm in inkling form.

Yeah I dive straight forward and try to get the enemy on the backfoot, but a lot of the time my goofy teamates waste time inking the immediate area and we get on the backfoot. I think you have to remember, it's not about painting empty walls, you have to erase the surfaces the enemy has painted.
As for weapons, since I played the whole single player with it the splattershot jr is my favourite so far but I haven't tried much else. I still feel the rollers are somewhat overpowered in determining who wins the turf war.
Saw this thread on GAF and I agree:
The Final Boss in Splatoon is one of the best Ive seen in Shooters.
"I beat the singleplayer earlier this morning and had a blast, Ive heard how the final boss is pretty hard and is fantastic in general so I was really anticipating him. When I finally got to him, I was happy to see how cool he was, I absolutely adored the music and his design.
On the actual fight, it was incredibly creative and incorporated everything you've learned in the game while continuously upping the anty and makes sure you use both squid form and kid form to the best of your ability, it almost borderline turns into a 3D shrump at the end with how intense and chaotic it gets but how great it feels when your focusing and are dodging and shooting with precision.
Its not like alot of boss fights in this genre where the boss is just one big bullet sponge or a QTE, it really delivers in all aspects. even the epic kind."
Oh man! Splatoon is the bomb! SO much fun, had an unbelievable run, not only did my team win everything I was the high scorer always nabbed over 1000 points and was beating level 12s - with me at level 4.
Just switched to that heavy damage, slow rate of fire gun. Excellent for killing foes but for turf covering my score dropped compared to the Splattershot jr. It's specials are pretty cool too.
GG stop posting huge spoilerific pics Not everyone started blazing through the single player mode like you did.

That's my main beef with the game. Your level doesn't represent your skill, just how much time you've spent playing. In Ranked battles your skill is reflected in your rank, but no way I'm going to be playing some lame king of the hill mode.

Yeah, a lot of the guns feel very samey. The biggest differentiating factors are the specials and how wide their nozzle sprays the paint.
It's Friday and my copy of Splatoon did not make it here yet.
Guess I'll finish up Second Son instead.

Come on, it's a picture of a giant bullet bill shaped fish
Okay and a boss.

I guess it does, your overall points you score per match gets added up to level you up. I think I'm just better than a level 4 because I played the entire single player before heading into multi and starting at level 1. In essence the single player was a like an extended training session. If you manage to beat the final boss, I think you're ready for anything in multi.
Love how you can get special skills and upgrades through clothes.

Shame.
So fucking unfair, I'm level 6 being dumped into matches with Japanese level 20s who can call in airstrikes and who have .92 caliber guns which almost insta-kill you with 2 shots. Meanwhile I'm stuck with pitiful weapons against them.
I've had quite a few instances where I would spring jump from respawn into insta-death, usually by an octostrike. There are some Japanese who are way too good with the sniper rifle. Basically I was the only non-Japan guy in the game.
My team was also a bit lame, they need to push forward instead we got on the backfoot, erasing damage.
If Edgecrusher is repeatedly shouting "You're a kid" to a woman he's having sex with, there's something very wrong.
