Lethal Protector marked the end of Venom being a cool character. He was a fantastic bad guy, and really could have become THE Spider-man villain, but he was one of the victims of the "anti-hero" trend that was going on in comics during the early 90's.  He went from creepy bad guy in a black suit with lots of teeth to some blithering violent hero, that spoke in second person, and always had his tongue sticking out and drooled green stuff.

These days Venom has actually gotten worse. It's a different guy wearing the suit now and he's pretty much just a few notches above a mindless monster who eats people. And the guy who used to be Venom - Eddie Brock - is in an even worse spot. He's basically back to being an anti-hero but now has a white version of the costume and is called. . .  wait for it. . . Anti-Venom!!!  He's a violent hero that can cure diseases.... yeah dumb as hell.

So to conclude. . . Venom sucks now and there will be no Venom game.

The japanese version of the Other M trailer shows even more awesome things (more melee encounters, more exploration and scanning of areas more open than corridors, etc), though much of it is the same. Good version.

Lovely. I dunno why people are scared of the idea of having rough auto aim in a 3D sequel considering you didn't need to aim in the 2D Metroid games, aside from rough directions like forward or up. Maybe some angled shots at specific boss weak points at times, but that's what the first person shooting is for. Other than that, only requiring you to roughly look at the direction of the enemy you want to shoot (especially since with the d-pad you only have 8 exact directions and not 360 degrees) was the only way to replicate that same feel of running forward gunning shit down. The combat still looks more interesting with the dodging detailed in the hands-on sessions and the melee moves which enemies can also do and you can counter as seen in this version of the trailer. Also, don't forget. All the Prime games had rather powerful auto aiming features... Anyway, the gameplay looks so fluid in this video!

 Downloading trailer now.

I aimed in metroid games all the time, ducking down to shoot low enemies, staying straight for ones horizontally, aiming upwards to get ones on the ceiling, diagonally up or down at times too. Or shooting in mid-air It's part of the 2D gameplay to me. I wasn't just free running through the levels as though my objective was to speed run and avoid everything. I don't want to have to enter 1st person just to get more accurate controls either.

I'm wary but still very interested.

Great trailer. Like how they mix the 2D with forward moving sections.

Er, that's hardly justified as aiming (especially having to enter alt firing modes to fire diagonally or to crouch and be immobile to "aim" low is not that different to entering a first person mode) and yes, you were able to just keep moving forward shooting or avoiding enemies for a lot of the game actually.

And nothing in Other M looks 2D btw. It was even clarified that at first he wanted to do it 2D gameplay, Klonoa style (those on-rails misunderstandings), but he changed his mind. You can always move in 3D around the environments in all 8 directions, even if it's just a corridor, you just generally won't want to do that in corridors so you keep running forward (the camera angles accodomating that making it easy to go forward with the d-pad alone apparently) there and only explore the bigger areas in 3D, or when the environment changes up like in the trailer when he moves in a corridor and then uses the morph ball to go to a different parallel to that area.

You know I think I may know why Red Steel 2 isn't selling better.  Here's the commercial I've seen running for it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTdmRR9U_3s (still can't figure out how to embed)

Pardon the poor quality, but it's the best I can find.  But here's the ultimate problem.  The barely show the game.  They focus a lot of the motion controls, which is good, but in the entire 30 second spot there is only one full screen shot of the game and that lasts all of 2 seconds.  This is not the way to show off a game. Sad too because this game has the look would impress any gamer.

Just another reminder that bad marketing is no better than no marketing.

Well it's not like I don't have anything else to play right now anyway. I'm just glad to finally have the big purchase of getting the system itself out of the way, the games will start coming soon enough. I could still get a game though if I really wanted to but I was kind of thinking of getting some other things outside of gaming. Perhaps I'll break down and get something for $30 or at least rent something this weekend.

People please read the review of Sakura Wars and start getting excited (or at least interested) on what looks to be another gem of a game from Japan.  I will get the Wii version if it has kept the Japanese language soundtrack otherwise I will buy the double disk PS2 edition (one for english one for japanese).

edit: sakura wars is developed by the guys that brought you skies of arcadia and valkyria chronicles!!! from the review " This is the same developer responsible for Skies of Arcadia and the absolutely brilliant Valkyria Chronicles -- and the latter's roots are especially apparent almost from the second you start your first battle." - GG i know how you love SoA

I broke my no-game-purchasing streak, broke down and ordered Sakura Wars.

Oh wait! That's not me, that's Yoda... I'm silly!  Nyaa

I got it today, I'll post impressions later!  Grinning

It's a bit different. I don't think I want to be stopping, have to wait for the camera to turn around, change my remote position and then fire, then release, have to wait for the camera to turn, change my remote position back, move and do it again. Aiming is aiming, even if there are weird workarounds to do it. I press up and shoot up, press down and shoot low, toggle diagonals and run and shoot where I want.

To me it would be like playing a  Contra game where you just hold down the fire button and watch as the bullets automatically home in on the enemy whilst I dodge about like an obstacle course. Unless it's a homing gun, I want to aim too. I'll be interested in seeing more of this 3D gameplay because so far I see a lot of left to right, right to left 2D gameplay with some into the screen stuff. Playing with a d-pad I have a feeling those sections will be quite restrictive in movement.

Miyamoto is tough on the ideas of new developers, says people are afraid of gaming, not socially accepted like movies...yet

"When a young planner approaches me with a game idea, I'm rather a tough guy!  And I most often reject it - or turn it back to them. A good idea is something that does not solve just one single problem, but rather can solve multiple problems at once. It's easy for people to come up with a good idea that can focus on one problem, but that's not good enough.  So forever I'm sending back new ideas from the planners, and I say: 'This time I can't use your idea but please keep it in your mind and work on new ideas again and again and then you'll be able to find out some new, good ideas that can solve many other issues at one time.' Then that's the idea that we can use." - Shigeru Miyamoto

Miyamoto on working to make video games more socially acceptable

"The fact is many people are afraid or scared of gaming technology.  Actually it's very convenient, useful technology and as long as you can have some time to get accustomed there's nothing to be afraid of at all.  So my responsibility here must be to try to let people understand how convenient and useful game technology is and try to remove hurdles so that even your grandpa and grandma are waiting to turn on the power switch of your console easily without hesitation.   Very frankly speaking, I have to admit videogames still have some way to go in order to reach the level of movies when it comes to social acceptance by the general public. That reminds me I'm really grateful to receive this kind of award, and at the same time reminds me we still have to carry on making a great effort."
