Ok good. Gaf likes Echoes more. But they are crazy anyway.
Its total bullshit...prices should be going DOWN. I think Sony coming out with their own Premium model has a lot to do with this too....now MS feel they are justified in raising their price. The sad thing is, its all because of this extra SHIT that has nothing to do with gaming. Netflix, Facebook, Last.FM....I don't give a fuck about ANY of it. So why should I have to pay extra money for it?
Console online services should offer different price packs like Cable does. If all I want is access to GAMING stuff, I should NOT have to pay for all the other bullshit. Why they don't do this is beyond me. Yes MS, you would get more people playing online if playing online was $20 instead of $60.
This guy on Xbox.com said it well:
Game is also hella short and has possibly the most abrupt ending you'll see in any game this year. I can sum it up in less than five words, but I shan't.
It was part of the Capcom trio of god awful PS2 to PC ports - which also included Devil May Cry 3 SE and Onimusha 3.
"We expect somewhere around half of the current 15 million online game players to pay something for premium content, and expect the other half to play fewer hours online if the free experience is slightly less robust in the future. Should the 7.5 million people who choose to pay generate only $5.00 per month (around 11.5¢ per hour), publisher revenues and operating profits would increase by $450 million," Pachter went on to appromixate. We think that premium online multiplayer content will be the event that turns the negative tide of industry sales around." - Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter
Well up here in Canada the only increase for XBL is for the one month card and the increase is $1. However we've been paying $60 already for the 1 year cards and a lot of the new features that the US members get don't make it over here. Personally I'm fine with what I'm currently paying for the service.
Pretty much. You canadians are cool since the 1 yr price only went up in the states and Mexico. Yay. ._.
Game-crippling bug according to Giantbomb (don't shoot guys in the head with a shot gun or the game freezes up for 4 seconds - EVERY TIME).
But your post inspires/ reminds me to play K&L1 once I finish God Hand.
In perspective what's another $10 a year - like 4 cents a day? I hope the increase is a reflection of cost and not just "We're the gaming industry, you'll get a second job to pay for your hobby".
I was hoping they would not increase it until the next XB -- I guess we can see they are serious about not doing that for another 5 years.
Holy hell this man is evil.
"...We think that premium online multiplayer content will be the event that kills the gaming industry once and for all. Then I'll finally have time to crash my Ferrari's into my yachts and post the slow-mo footage on YouTube."
Fixed.
MMORPGs justify that monthly cost by providing a robust backend, specialised servers with player population that tends to far exceed most conventional games, and so on, and so forth. So yes, loads of people pay for that.
If you make an MMOFPS, then yes, people will pay similarly, assuming it's a good game (most attempts since Planetside have sucked). But you can't possibly justify monetising an FPS that uses the same structure current games do, ie, peer to peer gameplay (or for PC player-hosted dedicated servers) and a minimal backend required from the publisher, merely matchmaking and other minor bandwidth or storage features for example. People will call that a rip off, because it will be (more so than usual, as pricing already is).
Some will still pay, but not the majority. You'll just drive the majority into playing the next most popular FPS which won't monetise itself excessively in this manner in order to better compete in the market, since they'll be able to afford that. Even tiny indie developers provide online features these days, it's not costly. So even if 50% is willing to pay for who knows how long, do you want to risk losing the other 50% altogether from the $60 software sale? Because who would buy such an online-focused game like Modern Warfare purely for the SP, at full price? Noone.
Hell, the majority of gamers don't even pay for an MMORPG, and those who do pay for them tend to just stick with the best one, ie, WoW, which hardly leaves room for many other game sales and subscriptions, so after you sell that one huge game, be it Call of Duty or something else, what do you sell the next year? Or do you close up shop and live off the subscriptions for it alone? Lol?
I mean, yeah, the likes of Eve and other smaller-than-Blizzard developers find a niche audience to live off of but this is Activision, EA, and other such huge caliber companies that have expressed interest in monetising these games, they aren't gonna want to do that just for a niche. Besides, many other thought to be BIG MMORPG games are already looking for a different payment method, going free to play and having micro transactions for certain features, so that doesn't exactly show people are easy to bite into subscriptions.
I guess they just hope to all reach a sort of silent agreement among publishers where they monetise the whole genre so that players no longer have an alternative like they will if it's only Activision or only EA that does this, but if this happens there's bound to be a developer, small time or not, that will eventually rise through the popularity ranks thanks to not ripping people off like all these want to do, offering free online play for their FPS.
Besides, when most games' multiplayer is shit and forgotten 3 months past the release, and people go back to playing the 5 big online games out there, how can it be a good thing for people to monetise the multiplayer to every game? That will mean people will be even less eager to play, and may not even purchase it. While for games like COD, popular as they are, how will monetising "save" anything? These games already sell ludicrous numbers that far exceed the production cost, so why present it as if they barely make a dime on these and need a way to make more from them? Is he just a corporate mouthpiece for companies like Activision or what now?
The optimist proclaims we live in the best of all possible worlds
while the pessimist fears this is true.

I know it's only $10 and I know Archie and Canada gamers have been paying $60 a year for Live already so maybe I shouldn't complain too much, but it's just the thought of MS raising the price after all these years of paying $50 for it.
Basically the question is, why now?

Well, MS didn't get to become one of the biggest companies in the world by being charitable. Yes, you should complain. Why not? If you're against this move why the hell shouldn't you complain?
I'm really, really hoping that they have some improvement plans for XBL down the road that they aren't revealing yet. I've heard talks about dedicated servers for Call of Duty: Black Ops and Gears of War 3 plus Square-Enix has been in talks about something to do with Final Fantasy XIV and how it goes through Live. I think SE want it done a certain way and MS wants it done their current way, I'm not sure how or what exactly and this may not even be applicable.
Believe me, I'm complaining...just to myself at home in out of respect for our fellow Canadian gamers.
But in the US...screw MS those greedy turds!!!
